Uruguay’s 2026 Independence Day was celebrated in Nairobi with a gathering of friends of Uruguay and members of the city’s international community at Trademark Hotel. The evening honored the country’s declaration of independence on 25 August 1825, bringing guests who wore the blue, white and gold colors of the Uruguayan flag.
Uruguay’s engagement with Africa reflects a commitment to South–South cooperation, cultural exchange and stronger commercial ties. The country maintains resident embassies in Pretoria and Cairo. Across the Atlantic, Uruguay and African nations share historical and cultural connections shaped in part by Uruguay’s Afro-descendant heritage. The Nairobi celebration offered a meaningful opportunity to recognise these bonds and encourage closer relations between Uruguay, Kenya and the wider African continent.
